Nancy W. (Whicker) Sutton, 86, passed away on April 15, 2026, leaving behind a life defined by quiet strength, devotion to family, and a deep commitment to caring for others.
She was born on August 29, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Charles Allen and Harriett (Hadley) Whicker. From an early age, Nancy was someone others relied on. As the oldest of seven siblings, she helped care for her brothers and sisters, which was a role that would come to define her life. She was, at her core, a caregiver.
Nancy built a meaningful career as a business teacher with the Brownsburg School Corporation from around 1979 to 2004. She taught more than curriculum. She taught responsibility, discipline, and real-world thinking, impacting generations of students in ways that extended far beyond the classroom.
She was a member of Tri Kappa and Delta Phi Epsilon, and a faithful member of Hadley Friends Church, where her life reflected the values of service, humility, and consistency.
Nancy was also very clear about what she did (and did not) enjoy. Although she was raised on a farm, the barn was never her place. She was more than happy to let others handle that while she focused on the home and the people in it. And while she gave her all to those around her, gardening was not among her gifts. She had a “brown thumb,” with a rare ability to struggle even with plants that required no care at all.
But what she did grow through her time, her presence, and her unwavering care was a family. She is survived by her sons, Gary (Mary) Sutton and Jay (Michele) Sutton; her grandchildren (Mike, Sam, and Kylie); and her siblings Janet Stephenson, Barbara Jane (late husband Mike) Peters, David (Suzanne) Whicker, John (Jolin) Whicker, and Richard (Debbie) Whicker.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William “Bill” Sutton; her parents, Charles Allen and A. Harriett Whicker; her brother, Mike Whicker; and her grandson, Will Sutton.
In the end, Nancy remained who she had always been. Someone who showed up. Someone who took care of others and put family first. That is how she lived, and that is how she will be remembered.
