Myrtle Irene (Shockley) Britt passed away on October 16, 2024, she was born on August 15, 1935, in Clermont, Indiana, to Orville and Martha Shockley. She is preceded in death by her brother Virgil Shockley and her husband Bobby Britt. Myrtle is survived by her three children: Kevin (Kathy) Britt, Kim (Doug) Lynch, and Kent (Kelly) Britt; along with nine grandchildren: Eryn Morrow, Amanda Britt, Jessie Stewart, Kayla Nichols, Kelsey Sexauer, Alex, Drew, Elle, and Jake Britt. She was also blessed with six, soon to be seven, great-grandchildren: Kai, Mia, Luke, Kate, Abby, and Rory.
Myrtle grew up and attended elementary school in Clermont. Her father’s work on the railroad gave her the cherished opportunity to travel the country by train, a privilege she carried fondly throughout her life. During her time at Ben Davis High School, she and her brother became 4-H judges, traveling to state fairs across the country. Thanks to her success in 4-H, Myrtle was offered a full scholarship to Purdue University, an accomplishment of which she was extremely proud. However, she chose a different path and attended business school, later working at Allison in Indianapolis and Quaker Maid in Terre Haute. Once starting their family, she worked part-time at Maidenform and Warner for many years until her retirement.
On June 4, 1955, Myrtle married her high school sweetheart, Bob, and together they enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage until his passing. Myrtle was an active and devoted member of Chapel Rock Christian Church, where she found joy in her Sunday school class, Bible studies, and the Rockets group. On any given day, she could be found working in the yard, scrubbing a nook or cranny, or refinishing a piece of furniture.
As a mother, Myrtle was deeply involved in her children's lives, always present at their school events and sporting activities. This dedication extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If there was a game or meet, Myrtle could be counted on to be there, cheering them on. Her commitment to supporting her family’s sports achievements was remarkable, particularly through her connection to Ben Davis High School, where she served as the “First Lady” of the Athletic Department for many years. Even after Bob’s passing, Myrtle continued to attend countless sporting events at Ben Davis.
Myrtle leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and love for gathering around the table for big family meals. Her strength, courage, and devotion to those she loved will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
