MONTY WAYNE COMBS
Monty was born August 7,1951 in Indianapolis to William H. Combs and Maxine (Baker) Combs. He spent his childhood playing baseball while attending White River Elementary School, then North Central High School, from which he graduated in 1969.
He attended Union College (Barbourville, KY) on a baseball scholarship before returning to Indianapolis to attend Marian College, where he also was on the Marian baseball team.
In 1971 Monty married Lynn Carbaugh, with whom he had two daughters, Nicole Lynn and Kelly Ann. Subsequently, Monty married Betsy Montgomery and her daughter Julia Elizabeth. Betsy and Monty were married over 36 years.
Monty started his working career as an accountant for Roberts Dairy. He was then elected Constable for Washington Township, Marion County, Indiana and served in that office over 20 years. While working for the Marion County Prosecutor's office, Monty was a co-creator of Adult Protection Services, which continues to be a valuable agency against elder abuse.
He served as Chief Deputy for the Marion County Treasurer's office, then Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Workforce Development and the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Monty then moved to the private sector as CFO of EmployIndy.
Monty was graduated from Indiana University/ Indianapolis with a degree in criminal justice/ accounting.
At the chagrin of many political candidates, he and Betsy moved from their home at 79th and Dean, a location that was deemed a most valuable location for yard signs during election season!
After having lived in Speedway, IN for five years, Monty was persuaded to run for the position of Clerk-Treasurer of the Town. He held that respected position until his retirement in February 2020
Monty was preceded in death by his parents and sister Cheryl Yvonne Stapelton. Besides his wife, Betsy, survivors include his brother, Rick (Beth) Combs (Advance, IN): step-mother, Shirley (Skirvin) Combs (Indianapolis); their three daughters, Niki (Jamie) Geiger, (Indianapolis), Julie (Desmond) Rutland, (Indianapolis), and Kelly Ouattara, (Brownsburg, IN), seven grandchildren and one great-grandson, Sasha, Delaney, Ben, Samaya, Samone, Souleyman, Djeneba and Devin.
Visitation will be held Monday, May 12, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Home, 2950 N High School Road, Speedway, IN, followed by a "Gathering of Memories" from 1:00 to 1:30 PM. Interment will be at West Ridge Park, 9295 W 21st St. Indianapolis, IN 46234.
