Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mildred Beery Wood, 97 of Westfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 4, 2015. Family and friends are invited to gather from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, November 9 at Flanner and Buchanan-Hamilton Memorial Park. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 10 at Eagle Creek Evangelical Friends Church. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
Mildred was born May 25, 1918 in Zionsville, IN to the late Ernest and Emma Hornaday. She enjoyed a special lifelong relationship with her twin sister, Mary. A proud graduate of Zionsville High School and Butler University, Mildred was a strong advocate of education. She devoted 33 years of her life as a popular fourth grade teacher for the Westfield School System. Mildred cherished her students, which often included generations from the same family. She provided a caring learning environment where each day started with the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. Following her retirement in 1984, she became an active member in the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
A devout Christian, Mildred attended Eagle Creek Evangelical Friends Church and the Sheridan Wesleyan Church. While an active member of the congregation, her role as a true servant of God went beyond Sunday services. She generously supported childrens charities and delivered Meals On Wheels into her 80s.
Mildred was the widow of former Westfield Town Marshall Edwin Huck Beery, to whom she was married for 39 years. Mildred is survived by her children, James D. (Julie) Beery and Mary Lou Harris. Her son, Jack Beery, Sr. and her daughter-in-law, Merry (James) Beery, preceded her in death. She took great pride in her grandchildren and her greats. Mildred rarely missed a game or event, always providing positive support (and often a post-game dollar bill). Grandchildren include, Jack (Erin) Beery, Jr., Brad (Jennifer) Beery, Marsha (Scott) Jones, Meredith (Ted) Miller, Daniel (Sabrina) Beery, Eric (Jennifer) Brand, Kyle (Amber) Brand and Stacy Beery; and step grandchildren, Megan (Heath) Reburn, Hannah (Brent) Carter, Adam (Jill) Miller, and Noel (Patricia) Miller. Her great grandchildren are Britt and Bryce Beery, Ryan and Lauren Beery, Jacob and Maura Jones, Wyatt Oxley and Mia Miller, James and Sophia Beery, Austin Brand; and step great grandchildren, Caleb, Eli, and Isaac Miller, Bryce, Emma, and Riley Reburn, Hope, Nadia, Luke, and Lilianna Carter, Eliana and Zeke Miller. In 1982, she married Fred A. Wood and they enjoyed 25 wonderful years until his passing in 2007.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Historical Society of Westfield.
