Michael P. Thompson, a talented craftsman and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his home on March 23, 2026, following a courageous four-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Born on December 27, 1963, in Indianapolis, Michael was a lifelong resident of the city he loved and cherished.
Michael built a remarkable career as a finished carpenter, a trade in which his gift for perfection was widely admired. His skill and dedication to his craft brought beauty and functionality into many homes, leaving a legacy of workmanship that truly stands the test of time. Beyond his professional achievements, Michael found joy and comfort in simple pleasures—boating, the hands-on satisfaction of carpentry projects, and spending quiet mornings fishing, knowing those catches would soon turn into a celebration at the next family fish fry.
He was a man who lived life to a soundtrack of classic rock, country, and the great singer-songwriters of his era. Whether he was working in his shop or relaxing at home, music was simply a part of who he was—even if Michelle occasionally had to remind him that the rest of the neighborhood didn’t need to hear it quite as loudly as he did.
Above all else, Michael was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Those closest to him were the center of his world and his proudest accomplishments. He was the wonderful dad and caring husband whose presence was a source of strength and warmth to his family. To his grandchildren, he was simply the best "GP," a title he wore with great pride and affection.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donna and John Wolfgang, and his brother, Jack Thompson.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Michelle; his parents, John and Judith Thompson; his sister, Christy Thompson; his son, Warren (Ashley) Cornelius; his daughter, Nikki (Tyler) Wolfe; and seven beautiful grandchildren who were the light of his life: Will, Carter, Aiden, Ellie, Riley, Rosie, and Kenna.
Services to honor Michael’s life will be held at Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park East Funeral Center, located at 10722 E Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46229. Visitation: March 26, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, continuing March 27 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Funeral Service: March 27 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
