Michael Billman Herkless, 87, of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014. He was born on June 1, 1927 in Indianapolis to Darwin and Charlotte M. (Billman) Herkless. Michael worked for the Indianapolis Star Newspaper from 1940 to 1988. He is a proud veteran of our armed forces, serving in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. Michael was a founding member of the American Legion Post 497 and was also a member of the VFW #98. He was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America as well as Sea Scouts Ship 21. He is survived by his children, Michael B. (Judy) Herkless, John D. Herkless, Dianne F. Gordon, Edward F. Herkless and James P. (Karen) Herkless; grandchildren, Stephen (Emily) Schilling, Cari Gordon, Bryan Herkless, Bobbi Gordon, Shelby Herkless and David Herkless; great-grandchildren, Henry and Evie Schilling. Michael was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Jean Herkless, who passed away on October 19, 2013. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at 3pm at Flanner and Buchanan – Speedway; visitation will be 2 hours prior to the services. Burial with military honors will take place on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 10am in Floral Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 497, or to an American veterans charity of your choice.
