Michael J. Atkinson, 48, of Zionsville, died peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, June 14, 2011. Mike was born June 3, 1963 in Indianapolis, IN and lived in Zionsville his entire life. He was educated and graduated in 1982 from the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis.
Mike was a member of the Order of DeMolay, Sons of the American Legion, and the Indianapolis Deaf Club. During high school, he had worked at Naval Avionics and upon completion applied his skills in general construction. In spite of the challenges life presented, Mike always overcame them with his sense of humor, friendly demeanor, and his warm smile. His kind heart will be forever treasured and truly missed by all who knew him. Mike is survived by his mother, Bonnie Hammond Klingler; his father, Robert K. Atkinson, Jr.; his cousins, Paul and Ken Profrock; and his beloved four-legged companion, Annie. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Gwen Markland; his paternal grandparents, Robert K. Sr. and Geneva Atkinson; his aunt, Janet Profrock; his uncle, Kenny Atkinson; and his step-father, Joe Klingler. Visitation will be Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 10 am to 12 pm at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center, Zionsville with a service beginning at 12 pm. Burial will follow at Eagle Creek Cemetery, rural Hamilton Co.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana School for the Deaf, 1200 E, 42nd St., Indianapolis, IN 46205.
