Michael A. Raftery,
a lifelong resident of the Indianapolis area, passed away June 29th at age 82. Born on April 18, 1929 on the east side of Indianapolis to the late Michael Albert and Dorthea Raftery, Mike graduated from Catherdral High School then served in the US Army in Germany from 1948 until 1952. Returning to Indianapolis Mike began his 37 year career at Naval Avionics where he rose to the position of Electronics Inspector. While there he met, courted, then married Jo Ann Stufflebem and they began their 56 year marriage. Mike and Jo Ann together raised 3 sons and a daughter, all of who went on to become college graduates and enjoy successful careers. After retiring, Mike continued his work in the defense industry, first working for Softech, then SAIC as a consultant. Mike was also proud to be able to spend time working in his garden, as well as landscaping, fishing, spoiling his grandchildren, and enjoying a good story and a great laugh with his many friends and loving family. Mike is survived by his wife Jo Ann, his sons Mike, Pat (wife, Vickie) Scott (wife, Tawny); and daughter Kathy (husband, Tom) Anderson, his eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, sisters Carolyn Shelby, Ruth Hock, and Peg Havlin, and was predeceased by sisters Betty Foley, Patty Bailey, and Dorothy Schneider. The family will receive friends after 10:00 am Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center – Washington Park East 10722 E. Washington St. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 am in the funeral center. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross.
