Merna Mosel Ruby of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 27, 2023. She was born on September 22, 1938 to Francile and Harold Mosel from Monroeville, Indiana. She graduated from Southside High School in Fort Wayne, Ball State Teacher’s College, and Ball State University, where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.
Merna spent the early part of her career as an educator serving as a 6th grade teacher in Orange County California. She later moved back to the Midwest to further her education and become a Speech Pathologist, serving Indianapolis Public Schools for 30 years. In 1999 she retired to become the Executive Director of “Camp Grandma,” which was the loving term coined by her four grandchildren who enjoyed many outings with her to the Zoo, the Children’s Museum, Conner Prairie, and the Speedway Museum, where she was a card-carrying member at each community venue. Over the years, Merna enjoyed being an enthusiastic supporter at the ice rink, stage, field, and at many award ceremonies.
She never missed the opportunity to gather with family or fellowship with friends and found great appreciation in connections with all people. She was an avid Cubs fan and watched every game broadcast and enjoyed attending in-person at Wrigley Field with family members on special occasions. She loved traveling with friends and found special joy in taking her family on grand adventures.
Merna found great pleasure in contributing to the community through her volunteer involvement with Bread and Bowl Soup Kitchen at North United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She loved working with the Bread and Bowl team to prepare meals and interact with the clients, many with whom she cultivated special friendships. Merna was also known on occasion to visit local nursing homes as her clown persona “Mosie Clown,” and brought joy to residents who were confined or isolated.
Merna’s family thanks the compassionate team of doctors and nurses at IU Health who cared for her during her recent hospital stay, and those who took care of her health needs on a regular basis over the years.
Merna is survived by her sister Marcia Mosel Smith; daughter Ellen Rogers (Scott); son John Ruby (Jill); Grandchildren Jacob & Elise Ruby, Maddie & Emma Rogers.
Merna was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years John Ruby, parents Francile (Brown Shaffer) & Harold Mosel, and infant granddaughter Grace Ruby Rogers.
Services will be at North United Methodist Church on October 7 at 1:00 pm, with a visitation prior from 11:00-1:00, also at North Church. A private burial will follow the service.
