Melvin Vonne Sims

Melvin Vonne Sims, age 75, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday night, July 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Melvin was born on February 11, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was raised and graduated from Ben Davis High School. He later attended trade school and earned certifications in mechanical machine repair and as an industrial electrician. A hardworking and skilled man, Melvin took great pride in providing for his family. He retired from Carrier Corporation in March of 2022.

Melvin devoted his life to his family and to building a beautiful life alongside his beloved wife, Vickie. Together, they shared 55 and a half years of marriage filled with love, faith, and countless memories. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose patient and giving heart made those around him feel deeply loved.

Melvin’s faith was at the center of his life. He loved the Lord wholeheartedly and was dedicated to his church Souls Harbor Assembly of God. When it became hard for him to attend his home church he enjoyed the Jimmy Swaggart bible studies and live church online. He never missed an opportunity to share God’s Word and believed in showing love and grace to everyone, regardless of their past or circumstances. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

In his spare time, Melvin loved fishing and enjoying the beauty of nature. He treasured vacations to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and trips to Brown County. Some of his family’s most cherished memories are of early morning breakfasts, fishing trips, and the simple everyday moments spent by his side.

Melvin is survived by his beloved wife of 55 and a half years, Vickie Sims; his two daughters, Michonne Laser (Buzz Lovko), and Shaelyn Gibson (Manny Perez); his son-in-law, David Gibson (Kim); his grandchildren, Madison (Matthew) Stadlberger, Eva Laser (Corbin Sanders), Sophie Laser, and McCoy Gibson, Mark Marksberry; and his sister, Rheadawn McCarney.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Sims; his mother, Ruth Shannon; and his brothers, Tyrone Sims and Gregg Sims.

Melvin leaves behind a legacy of faith, unconditional love, patience, and kindness. Though Parkinson’s disease and dementia took much from him in his final years, they could never take away the man he was or the love he gave. The lessons he taught and the example he set will continue to live on through his family for generations to come.

In accordance with Melvin’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan – Floral Park Funeral Center, located at 425 N. Holt Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46222.

A Memorial Service celebrating Melvin’s life will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Barry Curtis of Souls Harbor Assembly of God will officiate the service jointly with Pastor Kenneth Duke.

Inurnment will follow at Floral Park Cemetery.
