Melvin G. Hoffman, 89, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013. He was born on June 13, 1923 in Racine, Wisconsin to Gustave and Oletta (Eifler) Hoffman. Mel was a graduate of Washington Park High School in Racine, and served his country in the U.S. Air Force at San Angelo, Texas during WWII. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Purdue University and worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Allison Gas Turbine until his retirement in 1983. While at Allison he performed stress analysis on jet engines. Mel was an avid golfer who enjoyed all the friends he played golf with over the years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 497 and a longtime member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Speedway. Mel is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Doris (Law) Hoffman; sons, Richard (Cecily) Hoffman and John (Kim) Hoffman; grandchildren, Zachary (Joanna) Hoffman, Emily (Nick) Osborne, Brian Quarles, Chris Hoffman, Ashley Hoffman, great grandchild Eli Cook; sister, Dorothy Masare; and brother, Gilbert Hoffman. He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Robert Hoffman. Visitation for Mr. Hoffman will be held at Flanner and Buchanan – Speedway on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 from 11am until 1pm, with funeral services beginning at 1pm. Entombment will follow in Lincoln Memory Gardens, Whitestown. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Andrew's Lutheran Church.
