Max Haughton

Max Sheffler Haughton, 81, of Zionsville, IN died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family on April 23, 2015. He was born August 10, 1933 to the late Charles A. and Ola Z. Haughton in Carlisle, Indiana and was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School and Howe High School. Max's working career began at Detroit Diesel Allison before he established Max's Market on East Washington Street in the late 50s. He was a successful liquor salesman with Palumbo Distributor and eventually, with his partner, established Village Liquors. In 1973 Max was honored for his work in the liquor industry by his induction into the Old Taylor Hall of Fame. In 1953, he married the late Barbara Hohn, the mother of his five children. Max and Susan Ritter married in 1992. Max loved to spend his free time boating on Lake Michigan, playing golf and attending horse races, especially the Kentucky Derby. Any time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren was special to Max. His was a life well-lived. Survivors include his wife Susan, children Pamela Hamm (Keith), Sherri Neal, Michael Haughton, Dawn Wiesinger (Jeff); grandchildren Bryce, Logan, and Hannah Neal; Ross and Sam Haughton; Chase and Max Hamm; and Aidan Wiesinger. Max is also survived by sisters Janet Haughton McCann, Karen Haughton Mosley, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-mother Elsie S. Haughton, his son Mark Haughton, and daughter-in-law Melonie. Visitation and services will be held at Christ Church, the Lutheran Church of Zionsville on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m., with the celebration of Max's life at 3:00. Those wishing to do so may make contributions to the American Heart Association or the Boone County Humane Society.
