Mavilla (Rainey) Richter
96, passed away on September 14, 2013. Mavilla was born to the late Grover and Don (Finley) Rainey in Elizabeth Town, IN on May 4, 1917. She graduated from Shortridge High school and attended Butler University where she obtained a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1938. Mavilla became a member of Pi Beta Phi in 1935.
She earned the title of Miss Indiana in 1937, a title which followed her remainder of her life. Mavilla married the love of her life, William "Bill" Richter on June 3, 1939, and together traveled to all 50 states and many foreign countries. She was a member of Bellaire United Methodist Church from 1940 until its' closing in 2007, afterwards transferring her membership to Walnut Grove Chapel in Indianapolis. She was a member of numerous clubs, bible study groups and organizations in the community, and held various offices in her church.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William E. Richter, son; William D. Richter, and sister; Roselind Chaney. She will be lovingly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Tom Durflinger; daughter-in-law, Nancy Richter; grandchildren, Holly (Chris) Layer; David (Linda) Richter; Scott Durflinger and fiancé Megan Mahoney; Melissa (Dan) Weise; Craig (Kristina) Durflinger; fourteen great-grandchildren, the first great-great-grandchild arriving in December, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Flanner and Buchanan – Carmel, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
