Maureen Ann Flanagan
76, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 1, 2014, at her home in Indianapolis. Born on September 2, 1937 in Indianapolis, she was preceded in death by her parents, James Flanagan and Angela Murphy Flanagan, as well as her brothers, James "Dutch" Flanagan, John "Jack" Flanagan, Thomas Flanagan and her sister, Rosemary Flanagan Boswell.
Maureen was a graduate of St. John's Academy High School. She was a former member of the Sisters of Providence for 20 years and known to many as Sr. James Angela. She was a first grade teacher for more than 30 years in various schools including St. Sylvester's in Chicago and St. Jude's, St. Michael's, St. Simon's, St. Ann's and St. Phillip's, all in Indianapolis. She was a member of several local parishes including St. Catherine, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Greenwood and St. Matthews. After retirement as a teacher, she also served as a Chaplain at Community Hospitals of Indianapolis.
Maureen was a treasured gift to countless first grade students and a long list of friends, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be deeply missed and forever lovingly remembered by all who were blessed by her infectious laugh and constant sense of human compassion and caring. All who knew her are in gratitude for her presence and example in their lives.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 3, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Flanner and Buchanan - Broad Ripple . Funeral Mass will be held in St. Matthew Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2014. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Providence.
