Maude Robinson Watts

Sister Maude Robinson Watts was born June 13, 1925 to Shelby Robinson and Berdie Lighter in Utica, Mississippi. She was the youngest of eight siblings and had an identical twin, Margie Robinson Smothers. On October 30, 1950, she was married to Elbert M. Watts in Columbia, South Carolina, at Fort Jackson, where he was stationed. They were the parents of seven children, three girls and four boys, six currently living. Her son Elbert M. Watts, Jr., preceded her in death. Sister Watts and Minister Elbert M. Watts, Sr. had been married forty-six years until his passing fifteen years ago. Sister Watts earned her high school diploma from Piney Woods School, in Piney Woods, MS in 1947. She attended Baptist and Church of God in Christ churches while in Mississippi. She joined First Church, Church of Christ (Holiness) USA, Indianapolis with her husband under the pastorate of Elder Joseph E. Holland in 1962. In her efforts to become a home owner Sis Watts started working at local nursing homes as a nurse's aide and eventually a cook. She received accolades for her cooking not only from the patients but workers as well. Prior to working outside the home she was the neighborhood baby sitter for young working mothers. After full retirement at the age of seventy-two she began working as a home aide for family friends. At First Church, Sister Watts has been a member of the Christian Women Willing Workers (CWWW), Three Sister's Nursing Home Ministry, the Kitchen Committee, and United Christian Women Ministries (UCWM). Her UCWM activities have included the Senior Ministry and as the character, Mrs. Live Right with the Glory Train Play. She attended and has been a delegate for the District / Diocese and National Conventions of COCHUSA. Sister Watts served on the Deaconess Board and was one of the cooks for the annual Christmas Dinner sponsored by the UCWM. As only God has a plan and a purpose for all the trials and tribulations a Christian has experienced in life, Sister Watts, has been called home and leaves to cherish her loving memory her surviving children Carolyn WattsMatsuo, Clement, Darrell, Sr, Gerald, Sharon Watts and Angela (Kerry) Cole. Also, three grandchildren: Nira Nicole, Darrell, II and Darren Watts. Three sisters-in-law: Bernice Broome (Utica, MS) and Lena Mae Watts (Jackson, MS), Dorothy Thomas (Chicago, IL) nephews, nieces and many loyal friends. Her siblings who predeceased her were Ruth Franklin Williams (Indianapolis), Lawyer Franklin (Muskegon, MI), Robert Thomas (Chicago, IL), Ella Mae Bland (Utica, MS), Howard Robinson (Utica, MS), James D.
