Matthew Winters Jr. died on February 2, 2012. He was born in Indianapolis the son of the late Dr. Matthew and Ninetta Illingworth Winters.
Mr. Winters graduated from Park School and attended the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. He received his bachelor and master degree from Indiana University.
Mr. Winters served as a cryptographer attached to the First Cavalry Division during World War II. He was later employed by the Indianapolis Public Schools for over 40 years as a teacher, principal, and a central office administrator, from 1950 until his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Winters is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bettye S. Winters; son, Matthew III and daughter-in-law, Vivian Winters; grandson, Dr. Joshua Winters; son, William and former daughter-in-law, Neysa Winters; grandchildren Alison and Mark Winters; sister, Jane W. Meister. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara W. Burridge.
He was a long time member of Second Presbyterian Church, serving as both a deacon and elder.
Services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, February 6 in the chapel at Second Presbyterian Church, with calling one hour prior to the service.
