Mary Lu Spencer
89, Indianapolis, died June 30. Mrs. Spencer was born in Charlestown, Indiana on June 5, 1924 to Dr. Thomas James Marshall and Lucile Carr Marshall. She graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis in 1941 and Butler University in 1945. While at Butler she was president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. An avid bird-watcher, she was a member of the Amos W. Butler Audubon Society.
A bench in her honor sits on the Woodland Trail near the Visitors' Center at Point Pelee National Park, Ontario, a favorite spot among bird-watchers. Mrs. Spencer was a member of the Butler Alumnae Literary Club, the National Puzzlers' League, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a long-time member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where she served as elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include daughters Ruth Johnson of Oakland Township, Michigan and Julia Katz of Deerfield, Illinois; sons-in-law Dr. A. Neil Johnson and Dr. Richard Katz; grandchildren Laura Johnson, Jennifer Johnson and fiancé Anthony Uruchurtu, Christopher Johnson and wife Jamie, Brian Katz and wife Chantal, Gregory Katz and fiancée Ellie Wen, and Evan Katz; and great-grandson Wesley Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert C. Spencer, son Daniel Spencer and brother Wilford Carr Marshall.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 5 at Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple, 1305 East Broad Ripple Avenue. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the same location.
