Mary Ruth Wagner Oldham was born on November 14, 1920 to the union of the late Willie Wagner, Sr. and Mary Boutte-Wagner in New Iberia, Louisiana. She was born at home, as the sixth child of that marriage with five more to follow. Her five older siblings were Willie Jr., Albert, George, Gertrude Viltz and Ollie Mae Daniels. Two younger sisters Ruby Gunn and Cora Lee White and younger brother James have already transitioned from this life. Myrtle Green and Dorothy Brooks (Curtis) remember her fondly as their older sister.
Mary Ruth ventured away from Louisiana and traveled north to New York City, New York where she was introduced to and later married Elbert Oldham, of Clarksville, Tennessee. After settling in Indianapolis, the couple became the proud parents of two children, Judy Marie Oldham Potts (Carlton) and Eric Brent Oldham (Wanda). The family worshiped and were active members of Riverside Park United Methodist Church. She served with the United Methodist Women, Usher Board and helped prepare and serve a plethora of church breakfasts, luncheons and dinner events.
She leaves behind three lovely granddaughters, Kellie Michelle McClung (Jim), Courtney Denise Penn (Jamaal) and Erika Oldham. Mary Ruth doted on and proudly spoke continuously of her two great-grandsons David Alexander McClung and Jordan Ellis McClung. Her many nieces, nephews and friends always referred to Mary Ruth as "Aunt Mae".
