Mary Kay Handy Snyder, 84, passed away December 6, 2023. She was the daughter of Robert and Mary Alice Elliott Handy of Anderson. Although born in Indianapolis, 1939, she grew up in Anderson and graduated from Anderson High School. She attended Butler University where she met her husband Richard C. Snyder of Indianapolis. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She continued her education earning a Master of Arts degree in guidance and counseling from California State University, Northridge. Upon graduation from Butler, she taught English at Eastwood Junior High School for three years before moving to California where she taught English for Los Angeles City Schools and Rowland Unified School District.

A business opportunity took Richard and Mary Kay to California in 1964 where she was an active member in many organizations; however, her favorite activities were a handbell choir and a Readers Theater troupe.

Upon returning to Indiana after 45 years in California, her activities included Assistance League of Indianapolis, Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae, the Carmel Library Guild, Carmel Symphony Orchestra League, Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Fortnightly Literary Club, and Colonial Dames of Indiana.

She is a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She and her husband were members of the Contemporary Club of Indianapolis and The Four Freshmen Society. Mary Kay loved being with her grandsons, and enjoyed walking for exercise, playing bridge and Butler basketball.

Mary Kay is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Alice Handy, husband, Richard C. Snyder, and sisters Rebecca Jane Kriebel and Elizabeth Ann Owens. She is survived by her son Jeffrey, daughter in law Amanda, and her grandsons Ryan and Luke.
