Mary Jane Smith, née Weeks, 87, a life-long resident of the Indianapolis area, was promoted to Heaven June 1, 2025. Although she was greatly loved and will be missed very much, her family takes comfort in the fact that she is resting in the arms of Jesus and is reunited with family members and friends who have gone before her.
Mary Jane Weeks was born in Indianapolis May 13, 1938 (Friday the 13th!), a beloved daughter of the late Holman Ellis Weeks and the late Mary Ann Hill Weeks. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, David Hill Weeks and Ralph Harmon Weeks; and two sisters, Frances Jean Weeks and Barbara Ann Weeks. She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Charlie Smith of Indianapolis; her daughter Colleen Smith and her son Greg Smith, both of Indianapolis; her sister-in-law, Joyce Nulton, of Crowley, TX; five nieces; and several cousins, cousins-in-law, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, June 23, from 4pm to 8pm at Flanner Buchanan - Broad Ripple, 1305 Broad Ripple Avenue. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 24, at 10:30am at Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian Street. Mary Jane's Final Resting Place will be at Crown Hill Cemetery.
She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Broad Ripple High School, both located in Indianapolis. She also attended Indiana University in Bloomington. Although her life’s work was creating a loving and comfortable home for her husband and children, as well as caring for elderly relatives; she did briefly work outside the home as a file clerk for an insurance company, an activities director for a nursing home, and a sales associate at a store specializing in fine antiques.
Although raised in the church, Mary Jane’s deep personal faith in Jesus Christ blossomed in her adult years. Her time as a student, and later a small group leader, of Bible Study Fellowship was very meaningful to her, as were her years volunteering at the Indiana Women’s Prison.
She spent most of her life living on the same street in Nora, a northside Indianapolis neighborhood, as she and her husband built their family home right next to the house where she grew up. In spite of several serious illnesses and health events throughout her life, she will be remembered for so many other things: a profound and sacrificial love for her family; her artistic talent and creativity; a passion for antiques, trees, traditional homes, British murder mysteries, and good food; and her exceptional skills as a hostess. She was not the sort of person to draw attention to herself, but those who took the time to get to know her appreciated her mischievous humor and sense of fun, her kindness, and her insightfulness and wisdom. May all those who read these words be inspired by her life to follow Jesus’ instruction to love God with all their hearts, minds, souls and strength; and to love others as themselves (see Mark 12:30,31).
Flowers are appreciated, as well as a donation in Mary Jane’s memory to Operation Smile or Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis.
