Mary Jane Dishon, 91, of Carmel, passed away November 27, 2013. She was born on February 25, 1922 to Arthur and Elastia Brown in Voorhies, Iowa and grew up in Oakland City, IN. She was a resident of Carmel for over 50 years and was a member of Carmel Friends Church. She retired from Indiana Mills where she worked as a sewer in their seat belt assembly area.
Mary Jane was an accomplished seamstress and was known for her Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that she made and sold to supplement her Christmas income. Many of our friends still cherish their dolls. She later turned her skills to quilting and we are blessed to have so many of these hand pieced treasures.
Mom absolutely loved to travel and her favorite companions were her two sisters, Eva Messersmith and Evelyn Jones. They traveled through the Panama Canal, saw the Australian Outback, attended the Calgary Stampede to name just a few. They were most known for the 20 consecutive years of camping each fall in Brown County, IN. Every time it would rain in October mom said it reminded her of Brown County.
Mary Jane was also an avid sports fan. She usually had a ball game of some sort on her TV or radio. She enjoyed cheering for Carmel Greyhounds, Indiana Pacers, and most golf tournaments especially The Masters, but her favorite was the Cincinnati Reds. She was quite proud that she has a brick outside the Reds Hall of Fame Museum.
She is survived by her daughters, Elaine (Jack) Kerley of Newport, KY, Linda (David) Lienerth, of Westfield, IN and Jane (Phil) Bush of Columbus, IN. Grandchildren include Amanda Kerley, John (Alexa) Kerley, Sara (Kurt) Billhymer, Wesley Lienerth, Kari Lienerth, Andrew Lienerth, Justin (Nicole) Bush and Natalie Bush. She has one great-granddaughter, Kendra Billhymer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters and nieces Sheila Messersmith and Deborah Jones.
A private inurnment will take place at Flanner and Buchanan - Hamilton Memorial Park in Westfield, IN. A celebration of Mary Jane's life is being scheduled for the spring. Donations may be made to Sanders Glen activities department, 334 S. Cherry St., Westfield, IN 46074.
A classmate from high school wrote this to describe our mother, "When duty and spirit clash, let duty go smash". May we honor mom by doing something that embodies this zest for life.
