Mary Charlotte Owens (née Long) was born on February 16, 1926, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Mary is one of nine children born to Erma Long and Frank Long Jr., both deceased. Mary was 91 years old when she passed away.
Mary accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in Clarksville. She was a longstanding member of Riverside Park United Methodist Church, and later became a member of University United Methodist Church where she worshipped and carried out her life as a child of God until her death.
Mary moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in her teens to live with her aunt, Mary Green. Mary was united in holy matrimony to Leonard A. Owens Jr. on October 3, 1945. Leonard preceded Mary in death on July 29, 1992. From their union, Mary and Leonard were blessed with one daughter, Joyce Marie Tucker. Mary was very proud of her daughter, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, which she often expressed to all who listened.
Although she retired from the traditional workforce a number of years ago, her roles as sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, neighbor and friend kept her very busy. When she wasn’t riding the Crestwood Village shuttle to her local coffee stops, mailing heartfelt handwritten cards or preparing food for family or friends, she was likely playing Scrabble or studying the latest Scrabble dictionary. Anyone who spent significant time with Mary would inevitably be challenged to a friendly though very competitive and strict game of Scrabble.
Those who remain to carry on the memory of Mary are her daughter Joyce Tucker; her brother Charles Kelly Long and her sister Margaret Greene; her devoted nieces and nephews, including Elizabeth Gold and Michael Long; her grandchildren Christopher, Brandon and Romy; and a host of grandnieces and grandnephews; all of whom loved her dearly. She will also be remembered by countless other family members and friends.
