Mary Catherine "Melty" (Melton) Chambers, 81, Carmel, passed away peacefully at home on December 17, 2011. She was born November 2, 1930 in Linton, IN, the daughter of Leon and Mary Melton.
Mary grew up traveling throughout the midwest and southern states due to her father's job. Her family eventually settled in Indianapolis. Unknowingly, she met her future husband, Mack Chambers, when both were in the 7th grade at St. Anthony's Catholic School in Indianapolis. Mary then attended St. Mary's Academy, graduating in 1948.
After high school Mary was an office worker at Lake Central Airlines. In 1950 she traveled to Europe with friends, and upon her return she was offered a job at Foster & Messick Insurance. Mary was a private secretary at the insurance company for the next seven years, and it was in that seventh year that she was reacquainted with Mack, and they were married on June 7, 1958 at St. Anthony's Church.
Mack and Mary lived briefly in Decatur, Illinois, before returning to Indianapolis where Mary was a homemaker. She gave birth to their first daughter, Kelly Marie, in May of 1959, and then their second daughter, Amy Diane, was born in June of 1963. The west side communities of Farley and Chapel Glen were where Mary and Mack raised their girls until 1975, when they relocated to the northeast Indianapolis neighborhood, Brendonridge. They remained there until a final move to Carmel took place in late 1996.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Mack Chambers. In addition to her husband, their surviving children include Kelly (Conrad) Mazeski and Amy (David) Solmos Wayne. Their grandchildren are Kelsey Marie Mazeski, Mack Conrad Mazeski, Miles David Wayne, Darby Christine Solmos, Margeaux Louise Wayne, and Shea Douglas Solmos. Mary's sister was Patricia "Pat" Melton, Sister of Providence. The Chambers are members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.
