Mary Adams

March 10, 1928 — June 18, 2014

Mary Caroline "Molly" Adams, 86, died peacefully on June 18, 2014, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. Molly was born on March 10, 1928, in Indianapolis, the first child of Caroline Godley O'Dell and DeForest O'Dell. She has one sister, Natalie Ellen O'Dell Peeler, who survives. During Molly's early years, as DeForest pursued his academic career, the family lived in New York and Macomb, Illinois, where she graduated from the high school operated by Western Illinois State Teachers College. Molly then entered Butler University, where her father joined her two years later as chair of the Journalism Department. The concern was whether Butler was big enough for both of them; it was. At Butler, Molly was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and met Jack Adams, whom she married in 1950 following her graduation. Jack passed away in 2006. Molly later completed a Masters Degree at Butler. Molly and Jack produced two sons, Rick (Becky) of Indianapolis, and David (Nik) of Boston, MA, both of whom survive; she has three grandchildren, Emily Adams (Devin Bryson) of Jacksonville, IL, Sam Adams and John Adams, both of Indianapolis; and three great granddaughters, Quentin, Greta, and Edith Bryson-Adams. Molly's busy life centered on her love for her family, service to her church, and her continuing love of learning. She was active at St. Paul's Episcopal Church as a Sunday School teacher, various committee work, and Bible Study. She taught elementary grades in the Indianapolis Public Schools, with posts at Schools 60, 80, and 92. Upon her retirement, she was active at the Indianapolis Propylaeum (Past President), Friday Afternoon Literary Club, Catharine Merrill Club, and the Fortnightly Literary Club. She was an avid reader, bridge player, and crossword puzzle worker throughout. The calling will be conducted on Monday, June 23, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Flanner & Buchanan-Broad Ripple. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 6050 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46220. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Music.
