Marthana M. Walters
95, of Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, April 03, 2014 in Indianapolis. Marthana retired after 35 years as a Teacher at Thomas Carr Howe High School and Broad Ripple High School, both in Indianapolis. She graduated from Shortridge High School in 1935 at the age of sixteen. She received her bachelor's degree from Butler University, did post graduate studies at The Sorbonne, University of Paris and earned her master's degree from Butler University. She was a member of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Butler Alumni Literary Club, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society and Delta Kappa Pi's recipient of the senior most likely to succeed as a teacher award. She was a novelist, essayist, biographic author and poet. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Walters. Survivors include her son, David Harrison Walters and his wife Dr. Yvonne Unna, daughter, Flora Ann Walters, sister, Flora J. Grosbach, grandson, Liam Unna Walters and six nieces and nephews. Services will be Friday, April 11, 2014 at 1 p.m. with calling from 11 a.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis Humane Society.
