Martha L Samples, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 24 at Hamilton Trace Senior Care (Fishers, IN) where she had been a resident since 2013. She is survived by her daughter Charlene (and her partner Donald West), her brothers and sisters-in-law CJ and Linda Stewart and Ollie and Martha Stewart, and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Born in Stuttgart, AR, Martha grew up in Springfield, IL. Before moving to Indiana to be closer to Charlene and Donald, she lived in the Douglass Hills section of Louisville, KY for more than 30 years. An avid gardener, Martha was a lifelong member of The Garden Club, where she enjoyed flower arranging and tending to roses. Her love of dogs was shared when she became a founding member of the Animal Care Society to help others adopt four-legged family members. She was seen daily walking her poodle Belle, and then her adopted poodle Freeway. Always an active volunteer, she also participated in Fifth Wheel and a local bridge group. She and Charlene had the pleasure and privilege to travel together to places like London, Paris, Austria and Amsterdam and for nearly 20 years they never missed Kentucky Oaks Day on Derby weekend.
A private service will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Fishers, IN, with interment to follow at a later date in the family's Brittin Cemetery near Springfield, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association, the Public Broadcasting System or the Anchorage (KY) Public Library are suggested.
