Mark Dwane Coovert

June 30, 1950 – October 29, 2026

Mark Coovert, 76, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of his daughter Corey, Grand dog Drambuie and chosen family.

A lifelong Indianapolis native, Mark was born and raised in Fountain Square. He lived the majority of his life as the self-proclaimed hillbilly of Meridian Hills. Mark was a man of integrity, kindness, lighting fast humor and wit. Together with his quiet strength Mark’s presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Mark served his country in the United States Navy aboard a naval repair ship. Many colorful adventures shaped Mark during his service. Following his military service, he had a brief stint working for the Indianapolis Housing Authority before building a distinguished career and devoting 38 years to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, where he served as Director of Facilities. Through his leadership, hard work, and dedication, Mark rose from the boiler room to the executive conference room. Mark was an integral part of the world's most renowned children's museum; no one knew the building or history of its inner workings better. He took immense pride in ensuring that generations of families could enjoy the museum.

Revolutionary war reenacting and playing Celtic folk music were Mark’s adopted hobbies. As a member of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, Mark met so many wonderful people who became family. With the 42nd Mark lived stories that created a legend. He played the Bodhran with Full Moon Folk Band and was the original friend in Father Son and Friends. Mark spent many years kilted up traveling the country playing and recording music.

Mark was preceded in death by his wife Sharon Coovert, younger sisters Naomi Adams and Becky Coovert.

He is survived by his sisters Mary Forrello and Sharon Burns and Mark’s loving daughter, Corey Coovert, who was the pride and joy of his life.

No one who knew Mark, did not know about “daughter.” Mark continuously supported Corey and her passion for horses. He was notorious for saying that “I didn’t raise a hot house flower”.

Mark's daughter, chosen family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him will remember his generous spirit, steady guidance, and unwavering love for those closest to him.

Mark's life was defined by service, dedication, loyalty and big-hearted love. He will be remembered for quirky, witty and in the moment, sense of humor, along with the undertone of realness that attracted so many.

His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, and the countless memories shared with family and friends.

In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held at this time. A celebration of Mark's amazing life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember the remarkable man he was through music, storytelling, campfire and sharing the jokes that Mark would not have held back.

Corey wishes to thank everyone for their love, support, and prayers during this difficult time.

May the Circle Be Unbroken.
