Marjorie “Margie” Colson of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on March 29, 2022 at the age of 74. She was born May 19, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan to Orville Raymond and Doris Marjorie Martin.
She attended Western Michigan University and graduated in 1969 with a degree in education. She was a teacher for five years in Detroit. During this time, she also was a model for Hudson’s Department Stores and continued to do similar work for Whirlpool Corporation promoting appliances as a hand model.
After graduation, she moved to the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor area of Michigan. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she decided to embark on a change in career. She became the Membership Director for the Twin Cities Area Chamber of Commerce. It was there she met what became her lifelong friend of 47 years, her beloved Birgit.
Her experience at the Chamber led to a sales opportunity in property development of time share properties in Hilton Head, Ireland, Utah, the Bahamas and several other countries. She became Vice President of Sales for Platinum Exchange Group in Grand Rapids.
Her superb sales and marketing skills found her entering the funeral industry by establishing a third-party marketing company representing funeral homes. She met another lifelong friend, Jodi Clock, who was with an insurer specializing in pre-need funding. Together they created one of the most productive teams at that time.
It was during that time she met her husband Tony with Batesville Casket company. This meeting turned into 27 wonderful years together. They each had found their soul mate. Their journey took them to Northern KY, Minneapolis, Chicago, back to Detroit and finally settled in Tony’s home-town of Indianapolis. In 2014, they purchased Harper’s Community Funeral Home near Ft. Wayne, IN and in 2017 a second business in Twinsburg, OH which their daughter manages today.
Margie loved all animals, flowers and anything involving nature. At their home in Indianapolis, she successfully had their property recognized as a “Certified Wildlife Habitat and Sanctuary” where an abundance of birds, squirrels, rabbit and deer can find food, water, and a comfortable place to dwell. Margie and Tony also have two small dogs Mitzi and Marco. Mitzi is a registered full blood miniature pinscher and Marco they rescued a year ago as min-pin-chihuahua mix.
Margie loved people and adventure. She was an accomplished athlete, excelling in swimming, ice skating, water skiing, dance, golf, and anything else she attempted to do. She loved spending time on the lake; visiting the beach, the mountains, shopping, cooking, entertaining her friends and family and passing on her love of nature to her grandchildren and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 27 years, William Anthony “Tony” Colson; Daughter, Sarah (Colson) Ross and her husband Jeremiah; three granddaughters, Kayla, Sadie and Beatrice and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She loved them all and never forgot an occasion.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother.
