Marjorie Kathryn Woods died Saturday, December 18 of natural causes in Bloomington, Indiana. She was 101 years old. Born April 28, 1920 in the small Northern Indiana town of Goodland, she moved with her family as a child to Logansport Indiana, where she grew up and met her future husband, Bob Woods, whom she married in 1941. Shortly after they were married, she and her husband moved to Indianapolis where they lived for many years and raised their two children. When her children were grown, she moved with her husband to Mooresville, Indiana, where her husband died in 1978. In 2005, Marjorie moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where she has since resided.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Bertel and Essie Harmon of Logansport, Indiana, her two brothers and their wives, Meredith (Wilma) Harmon of Chicago, Illinois and Robert (Barbara) Harmon of Rockford, Illinois, and by her husband Robert A. Woods.
Marjorie worked for many years as a secretary at the World Headquarters of the United Christian Missionary Society, then located in Irvington, Indianapolis. Later she worked as Administrative Assistant to the Vice President and Head Chaplain at Methodist Hospital of Indiana, where she made substantial contributions to the mission of the Chaplaincy Department, and the Departments of Pastoral Care and Pastoral Education. She retired in 1990 at the age of 70.
Marjorie and her husband both placed a high value on education and she used much of the money she earned to send her children, John and Linda, to Hanover College, for which they will be forever grateful. The most important thing to Marjorie was her family. Throughout her life she made sure the family always gathered together for holidays and birthday celebrations. She loved it when her Grandson, Jason and his friend, would visit on weekends in Mooresville to camp out in Bradford Woods, which was practically in her backyard. And she could listen for hours to her Grandson, Erik, talk about his biology experiments and his accomplishments as an entrepreneur. She was thrilled when Erik’s children, her Great-grandchildren, Makenna and Cole, were born. They are both good huggers, and she loved to receive their hugs when they visited her in Bloomington. Even in the end when her memory had begun to fade, she always remembered family members, and never failed to tell visitors about the two paintings on her wall that had been painted by her daughter-in-law, Lynn, and the crewel embroidery on the other wall, that her daughter, Linda, had made.
Her long journey has come to an end. Marjorie is survived by son, John (Lynn) Woods of Indianapolis and daughter, Linda Woods of Bloomington, Indiana, her Grandsons, Erik (Heather) Woods of Carmel, Indiana, and Jason (Zoey) Woods of Indianapolis, and Erik and Heather’s children (her Great-grandchildren), Makenna and Cole Woods. She loved her family very much. And her family loved her. She will be missed.
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 23 from 1-2 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St, Indianapolis. Funeral services will begin at 2 PM with burial following at Washington Park East Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Monroe County Humane Society, 3410 S. Walnut, St, Bloomington, IN 47401.
