Marilyn K. Halbrook
Indianapolis, passed away peacefully after battling pancreatic cancer on her 74th birthday, August 27, 2013. She was born in Indianapolis to the late Carl and Mary Miles.
She spent her primary and secondary years as a Girl Scout and active in her church youth group at Hope Church. She graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1957, then attended Baylor University one year and finished her undergraduate degree in Education at Butler University in 1961. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Marilyn went on to earn her Master's Degree from Indiana University. She taught most of her career in the Indianapolis Public schools with a couple of years in Pike Township and out in California. She took time off from teaching to pursue a career in cosmetic and fragrance sales, selling to department stores across the Midwest.
As an educator, Marilyn had a particular heart for working with kids with learning challenges as well as teaching ESL to refugees. She considered teaching her 'mission field', going beyond her teaching duties to meet the various needs of her students. In 2011, Marilyn took off on an adventure to Thailand to teach at the Chang Rai International Christian School for six months. It was there that Marilyn experienced a profound renewal of her faith. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society for educators.
Marilyn had a passion for volunteerism, traveling, politics and entertaining. She was known for her spunk and adventurous nature willing to go anywhere or try different things. She was actively involved in the Indianapolis Museum of Art Alliance, Indianapolis Day Nursery Auxiliary, Tri Delta Indianapolis Alumni chapter, Family Support Auxiliary, Women in Neighborhood Service (WINS – Past President), Pike Township Precinct Chairman/Ward Chairman, Methodist Hospital Task Core, Theater Arts Guild and the Riviera Club water babes aerobics group. She served on the Marion County zoning board, as a Docent at the Indiana State Museum, and treasurer for Broad Ripple H.S. class of '57 steering committee/treasurer. She was a member of First Baptist Church for over 30 years.
Marilyn is survived by her children, Geoff (Carrie) Halbrook, Brett (fiancée Lora Singleton) Halbrook, Kerri (Ryan) Thompson, 'adopted daughter' Michelle Beers and was a beloved Grandmother to her six grandchildren.
