Marie Lockwood

October 8, 1922 — March 19, 2016

Mary Marie Lockwood, 93, of Carmel passed away on March 19, 2016 at Wellbrooke of Carmel. Born October 8, 1922 in Pitman, NJ, she was the daughter of the late George W. Wickward, Sr. and Eva (Harper) Wickward. She graduated from Bridgeton High School in June 1940. On October 14, 1940 she married the love of her life, Dewey Felix Lockwood in Pitman, NJ. They were married 73 years before Dewey’s death in February 2014. They started their life together in Milltown, NJ and lived there until Dewey enlisted in the Navy during World War II, when she and daughter, Carol, moved to Pitman to live with her parents. After the war they moved to Franklin Park, NJ and then to Bridgewater, NJ.

When Dewey was transferred with Mack Trucks to Hagerstown, MD in 1961, Marie and the children relocated with him and she lived there until 1998. At that time they moved to Carmel, IN to be closer to her daughter, Carol, her husband, Dick, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Marie was a talented, godly woman. She loved to garden, and canned and froze the fruits of hers and Dewey’s labors – her pickled peppers were outstanding! She loved being in the kitchen, both her own and that of the Hagerstown Presbyterian Church; she was a true “Church Basement Lady.” She was a baker extraordinaire; her rhubarb and strawberry-rhubarb pies were second to none.

Marie was a gifted seamstress, sewing clothing not only for herself but others as well. She took painting classes, was a Girl Scout leader, and coordinated the Red Cross Blood Mobile in Hagerstown. When they moved to Carmel, she worked in the Braille Center at her new church home, Pilgrim Lutheran, creating Bibles to be sent around the world. When Dewey retired, they loved traveling the U.S. in their RV. They also visited Hawai’i, Germany, and Japan.

Marie is survived by her daughter Carol Dahoney (Richard) of Carmel; her son Dewey Felix Lockwood, Jr. (Sandi) of the Woodlands, TX; granddaughters Maryellen Dahoney Spicer (Steven) of St. Charles, IL; Erica Dahoney Harriman (Kevin) of Carmel; Elizabeth Dahoney Kuechler (Joshua) of Greenwood, IN; grandson Dewey Felix Lockwood, III (Tammi) of Spring, TX; and great grandchildren Luke and Hannah Spicer, Annie and Charlie Harriman; and Ryker, Joshua, Jr., and Vanessa Kuechler. Marie is also survived by one niece and seven nephews; her loving caregiver, Takeysha Love; and many extended family and friends. Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Dewey F. Lockwood, Sr.; her parents; her brother, George W. Wickward, Jr. (Sara), and sister Pearl Stewart (Andy).

The family thanks the staffs of Heartland Hospice, Manor Care Summer Trace, and Wellbrooke of Carmel for their outstanding, professional, and loving care of Marie over the last five years.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Heartland Hospice, 931 E 86th St #208, Indianapolis, IN 46240; Dementia Society of America (dememtiasociety.org); American Red Cross Blood Center; American Diabetes Association; or Pilgrim Lutheran Church Braille Center.
