Marian Newton Rand, 81, Evanston, IL, and formerly of Indianapolis, passed away November 28, 2012 in Skokie, IL. She was born June 2, 1931 in Elberta, AL, the daughter of Grant C. Newton, Sr. and Olevia (Webb) Newton, both of whom were Cumberland Presbyterian ministers. Because her father had pastored in various churches over the years, Marian attended schools in Gadsden, AL, Amorita, Waynoka, and Muskogee, OK, and graduated in 1949 from Arsenal Tech in Indianapolis. She earned her BA degree from Spaulding University, Louisville, KY. Marian served as a claims representative in the Social Security Administration (Lafayette, IN) and as a real estate agent in Youngstown, OH. She was associated with Indiana University Southeast (New Albany, IN) until she and her husband moved to Carmel, IN in 1996, when she became a docent at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Marian was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Grant and Maurice Newton. She is survived by her husband, Leon; her children, Debra, Paul, and Marta; and her grandchildren, Julia, Jessica, Jacqueline, Elena, Trevor, Mason, Benjamin, and Eleanor. Private family services will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis. A celebration of Marian's life will be held on Saturday, December 22 at 2 PM at All Souls Unitarian Church, 5805 East 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN. Contributions may be made to the Docent Joy and Memorial Fund at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 Michigan Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46208 or to a favorite charity.
