Marguerite Marie Travis Deckert

Marguerite Marie Travis Deckert, 100, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 10, 2022. She was born October 5, 1922, in Kingsbury, Indiana and was delivered by her father. Relocated to Indianapolis from Hamlet in 1938, she is a 1940 graduate from Shortridge High School where she played clarinet and saxophone in band and orchestra, was active in several clubs, bowling, and 4H. Marguerite continued her musical passion by playing in band at Butler University and was a member of a popular all-girl dance band, Belle’s Sharps and Flats, which played many venues around Indianapolis.

She married Charles Lee Deckert, Jr. on October 16, 1943, in Hamlet, Indiana at the family farmhouse where her sister, Jean, was the maid of honor. Her husband enlisted in the Navy in WWII, and she accompanied him to Naval bases in their early years of marriage.

She was an excellent seamstress, making several of her own clothes for herself and family, enjoyed embroidery, counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, crocheting, and latch hook. Marguerite served several organizations, including Camp Fire Girls, Indiana state election board, Deaconess and Circle Leader at North Tacoma Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Job’s Daughter’s International, Past Guardian of Bethels #94 Castleton and #125 Indianapolis, Daughters of the American Revolution, Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants, and was a 50-year member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church. She enjoyed a rewarding career as a Unit Secretary at Methodist Hospital, retiring in 1992. Her golden years of retirement were spent traveling and entertaining various groups for bridge, euchre, sewing club, family gatherings, and dinners.

Marguerite was a caring sister to Jean Arlene Travis Batten (Bill); a loving Mother to Linda Marie McGlothlin (Jerry), Colonel Brian Keith Deckert Retired (Susie), and Karen Sue Mitchell (Martin); a doting Grandmother to Amanda Marie Deal Cash (Jon) and Rachel Kay Deal Hill (Nate); a nurturing Great-Grandmother (GiGi) to Lily Marie Cash and Scarlett Diane Cash; a loved Godmother to Thomas Hwal Park from California, Elliot In-Ju Park, and Nathan Keola Park, both from Hawaii.

Marguerite was preceded in death by her mother, Blanche Edna Davidson Travis, father, Clarence Harold Travis, brother, Ralph William Travis, sister, Bernice May Travis Cassady, and daughter, Sandra Lee Deckert Newman.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 14, 2022, with calling from 10am to service time. Arrangements are entrusted to Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park North.
