Margot H. Ruusma, 88, of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday, August 11, 2021. She was born on August 3, 1933 in Tartu, Estonia to the late Arne and Alma (Leesik) Moetus. She started grade school in Estonia until World War II interrupted her education. Margot and her parents escaped first through the Austrian Alps through Germany where her mother gave birth to her brother Olaf Moetus in 1945. During WWII her family was sponsored by L.S. Ayres, which allowed them to relocate to the United States. They arrived in New York harbor on Thanksgiving Day, 1946. Her family continued on to Indianapolis, IN.
Margot was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School and earned an Associates Degree in Business from Butler University. While in college, Margot obtained her United States citizenship. She married the love of her life, Udo Ruusma in 1954 and they celebrated 44 year of marriage before his death in 1998.
Margot was a longtime employee of Indianapolis Power and Light, retiring in 1992. She enjoyed travelling with her husband, especially to their home country of Estonia. Udo and Margot often socialized with other Estonians in the Indianapolis area. Margot was an avid gardener, a Toastmasters member and tireless volunteer for the Republican Party. She loved to support her local sports teams, the Pacers and Colts and was a dedicated and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the sewing club. Margot greatly enjoyed watching the 2021 Summer Olympics right before her passing.
Margot is survived by her children, Ene Mullins and Mart (Rachel) Ruusma; grandchildren, Uri (Faith) Mullins, Josh (Julie) Mullins, Maia Ruusma; great-grandchildren, Elliott, Reese, Lincoln, Olive and Gage. She is also survived by her extended family, step-grandchildren, Joshua (Vanessa) Belcher, Sarah Belcher, Andrea (Andrew) Belcher, Lilah Belcher; and step-great-grandchildren, Katarina and Lorelai Dumser; brother, Olaf (Abbe) Moetus; and her canine companions, Delilah and Cooper.
She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband; and son-in-law, Jack Mullins. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 16, 2021 from 11am -1pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery.
