Margie Ruth Parrott Hart

Margie (Parrott) Hart was born on October 25, 1922, in Indianapolis. She passed away on Friday, October 19, 2012, at the age of 89. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Hart; son, Harold Steven Hart; and great-great-granddaughter, Sofia. Margie is survived by three generations of family including daughter Betty H. Wilson; grandchildren Leslie Dawn Wilson, Suzanne Wilson Hill (Marty), Rhonda Hart Akers, John Robert Wilson and Stephanie Hart-Jones (Benjamin Sr.); great-grandchildren Nicole, Amanda, Mackenzie, Lindsey, Samantha, Aaron, and Benjamin II; and great-great-grandchildren Cecilia, Cruz and Sebastian; brother, Frankie Parrott; sister, Helen Kinser, and many loving nieces and nephews. Margie worked at Kroger for 28 years where she served as shop steward for United Food and Commercial Workers; however, she considered taking care of her family her life's work. Known later in life as "Grammy," Margie once commented, "I love my family and know I am loved, not because my family tells me but because they show me every day." In addition to her love of family, Margie was dedicated to her community. She volunteered at IPS Schools #18 and #83, for the Indiana AIDS Fund, and through a 30-year membership in the Delta Sigma Kappa service sorority (Tau chapter). She was raised to be politically active, and worked on the campaigns for Senator Birch Bayh and Democrat gubernatorial candidate W. Wayne Townsend. Margie believed in exercising her civic duty and proudly voted in every election. She also was a lifelong advocate for organized labor. Margie lived life to the fullest, teaching her family "you choose your moods." As a result, she was rarely in a bad mood and always up for a new adventure. Margie's many hobbies included fishing, bowling, crochet, reading, crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. She enjoyed sports and was a season ticket holder for the Indiana Fever. She also was known for her cooking, especially her homemade biscuits and gravy. One of Margie's greatest joys was traveling with her daughter and extended family. She traveled across the United States and visited more than a dozen countries in her lifetime, including a birthday trip to Amsterdam immediately preceding her death. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 25, at 1 p.m. at the Flanner & Buchanan- Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Center, 9350 E. Washington Street. A "Celebration of Life" will immediately follow, to honor what would have been Margie's 90th birthday. She will be cremated and her ashes will be buried together with the family members who preceded her in death; a fitting resting place for the woman who felt her job was to take care of those around her.
