Margaret Jean (Wernicke) Herkless 83 of Indianapolis, IN died October 19, 2013. Margaret was born on October 22, 1929 in Chicago, IL to August Fredrick and Ethel (Donovan) Wernicke. Margaret began her career as a legal secretary for Chicago Title then worked for American States Insurance Company for 30 years. She then worked for Methodist Medical Group which is now I.U. Health where she retired in 2006. Margaret was active in Cub Scouts where she was a Den Mother and Girl Scout Volunteer. She was a member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #497 and V.F.W. Post 98. Margaret was a 35year Breast Cancer survivor who never lost her faith in fighting for the Cure. Calling will be held on Wednesday October 23, 2013 at Flanner and Buchanan-Speedway beginning at 4 to 8 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday October 24, 2013 at St Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church 6000 West 34th Street at 10 am. Margaret is survived by her husband Michael Billman Herkless and their children Michael B. (Judy) Herkless, John D. Herkless, Diane F. Gordon, Edward F. Herkless and James P (Karen) Herkless, her grandchildren Stephen (Emily) Schilling, Cari Gordon, Bryan Herkless, Bobbi Gordon, Shelby Herkless and David Herkless and a great grandson Henry Schilling and a sister Rosemary (Wernicke) Johnson. Burial will be in Floral Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
