Margaret Eleanore Rubick

May 6, 1935 — December 23, 2020

Indianapolis, Indiana

“Life is like this day – uncertain and very fragile. I find myself thinking, ‘What do I want for my boys, just in case I’m not here when they grow up?’ Growing up is hard work, and a mother’s job is to make it just a bit easier for her little ones.”

Margaret Eleanore Clark was born May 6, 1935 in Hawarden, Iowa to the Reverend J. Clyde and Mary Clark. She was the youngest of four. She was born before television, before penicillin and polio shots, before frozen food, nylon, Dacron and Xerox copies, before fluorescent lights, credit cards and ballpoint pens. Growing up in the Depression was never easy but she had a loving family and a strong faith, and that was enough.

Margy attended Sioux Falls College and graduated in 1957 before moving to Hills, Minnesota where she taught high school English for four years. Thereafter she returned to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, taking an administrative job at First Baptist Church. She worked briefly with the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. on his visit to Sioux Falls in 1961, a quiet honor she carried throughout her life.

In 1964 she moved to Indianapolis to marry Wade Drew Rubick and remained by his side for nearly fifty years until his death in 2014. The couple had two sons, Mark and Steven, and Margy proudly described herself as a homemaker, devoted to raising her boys.

In their later years, Margy and Wade travelled the world, visiting Russia shortly after the end of the Cold War, touring Europe and the Netherlands and – hesitantly – cruising the Caribbean. Once. She enjoyed these trips, but nothing brought her more joy than her five grandchildren: Reagan, Quintin, Olivia, Ava and William. These five reconnected her to her earlier years and gave her life renewed purpose.

In her 85 years she was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother and a grandmother. And a teacher. Always a teacher. She taught her sons, she taught her grandchildren, she tried to teach her husband. And her goal was always the same, to make life a little bit easier for her loved ones.

Margaret Eleanore Rubick died December 23, 2020. She is survived by Mark and Rebecca Rubick, Steven and Kathy Rubick, and her five grandchildren.

Private services will be held January 6, 2021. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her honor be made to the university of Sioux falls (usiouxfalls.edu), the Humane Society of Indianapolis (indyhumane.org) or the Wheeler Mission (wheelermission.org).
