Margaret "Peggy" Baldridge

September 17, 1923 — April 23, 2024

Carmel, IN

Margaret "Peggy" Virginia Hatch Baldridge, beloved wife of Paul Franklin Baldridge, mother of six children, ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully at the age of 100 on April 23, 2024, at her home of 55 years in Carmel, Indiana, surrounded by her five adult children. She was the last survivor of her generation in her family.

Peggy was born September 17, 1923 in Washington, DC, where she grew up and attended the Kendall School for the Deaf and then Gallaudet College. There she met her husband Paul and married him in 1944.  From Washington, DC, they moved to Arizona, then Missouri and finally Indiana, where over the years they raised five children as Paul pursued a career in deaf education. Peggy was always committed to creating a vibrant, self-confident family where she instilled in her children her own desire to constantly learn and improve. Her orderliness and tireless housekeeping, combined with her sense of style, made their house both a home and a showpiece.

Peggy and husband Paul were leaders of the national Deaf School system as well as the greater Deaf community in the United States. Peggy was a steadfast and dedicated employee for 27 years at the Indiana School for the Deaf, a premier educational institution that she loved dearly and where her husband Paul and both their daughters were teachers over the years.

Regarded in the community as a pinnacle of propriety, those who knew her personally loved her mischievous and infectious sense of humor, guaranteed to light up a room. Peggy was an avid bridge player and occasional tournament champion and participated in bi-weekly bridge parties for over 70 years. And she was a passionate walker, well-known to the staff at Carmel's Monon Community Center, who marveled at her ability to walk a mile until just a week before she died.

Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Paul Franklin Baldridge, parents Harvey Lee Hatch and Alma Moore Hatch, infant sister Lillian Lee Hatch, infant daughter Barbara Ann, daughter-in-law Judi O'Neal, son-in-law Wes Ford, and daughter-in-law Mary Thumann. She is survived by her daughters Bunny Baldridge Klopping (Hank) and Kitty Baldridge, sons Tommy Baldridge, Jimmy Baldridge, and Ronny Baldridge (Karlene), grandchildren Margaret, Christopher, Kimberly, Cort, Paul, AJ, Devin, Joshua, Jason, and Jamey, and great-grandchildren Caroline, Colin, Evan, Elizabeth, Arianna, Colette, Camille, Violet, Finn, Siena, Skylar, Jensen, Ellee, Tristan, Nylah, Jiles, Theodore, and Cassian.

A celebration of Peggy's life will be held August 27, 2024 at Flanner Buchanan - Hamilton Memorial Park Prairie Waters Event Center, 4180 Westfield Rd, Westfield, IN 46074. Flanner Buchanan Funeral Center-Carmel is handling arrangements.
