Maizie Knox

April 15, 1919 — January 27, 2014

Maizie Ruth (Tyner) Knox Passed away peacefully on January 27, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. Her life began on April 15, 1919 in French Lick, Indiana, the third of four children to the late James T. Tyner and Martha Eunice (Maize) Tyner. Due to her father's employment, her family moved frequently within Indiana, living for the longest periods of time in New Castle and Indianapolis. She was a proud graduate of Shortridge High School and had a lifelong close relationship with her siblings, Richard, Mary Zell, and James, Jr. (Junior Boy) who predecease her. On September 7, 1940 she married the love of her life, Roland F. Knox, at Broadway Methodist Church in Indianapolis. They spent 57+ wonderful years together before Roland passed away on March 15, 1998, as a Lt. Colonel in the Indiana National Guard. Much of the life they shared revolved around their active lives in the military, military organizations and military friends. Together Maizie and Roland raised four children: Janice K. Confer (Ron), Andrea Knox Gregg, Pamela Knox Hammersley (Don) and John Roland Knox (Jan Abbs). Her children survive as do her seven grandchildren: Martha McGuigan (Doug), Joseph R. Azbell (Tracey), Frederic K. Azbell III (Charla), Amy Warrum (David), Brian D. Confer (Dani), Jordan J. Knox and Jessica J. Knox. Roland and Maizie were further blessed with eleven great grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart: Jon, Tyler and Jimmy McGuigan; Anthony and Rachel Warrum; Drew, Alli Mae, and Sam Azbell; Evan, Abigail and Madelyn Azbell. She is also survived by her beloved nephews: Richard T. Tyner, Jr. (Pam Kellett) and James R. Tyner (Amy). Throughout her life, Maizie Ruth was involved in many community organizations including serving as President of the School #66 PTA, as a 50+ member of the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of the D.A.R., Sunnyside Guild, The Marion County Republican Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader to name a few. A lifelong Republican, Maizie Ruth spent many volunteer hours working at Marion County Republican Headquarters, working at the polls on election days, and campaigning tirelessly for various Republican candidates. For many years, she was a member of Broadway Methodist Church and Castleton United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, and Christ by the Sea Methodist Church in Vero Beach, Florida. Maizie also spent many years gainfully employed by Overhead Door Co. and American States Insurance. She was also a businesswoman, owning and managing in a coin operated Laundromat in Chapel Hill on the west side of Indianapolis. For 18 years (1979 – 1997) Maizie and Roland enjoyed an idyllic retirement in Vero Beach, Florida. They made many friends, enjoyed golf, dining out by the ocean, and entertaining friends and family. They were grateful for every day of their life together. Maizie and Roland returned to Indianapolis in late 1997. Throughout her life and final illness, Maizie Ruth retained her sense of humor and her generosity of spirit. She loved her family and friends unconditionally and she leaves behind many who will mourn her but be grateful for having known her. She particularly enjoyed the company of, and loved, her special friends, Vicki Koenig (Mike) and Toni Robbins (Ron) and their families. Calling for Maizie Ruth will be at Flanner and Buchanan- Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in the Good Shepherd Chapel on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 2 p.m. with service to follow at 3:30 p.m. Maizie Ruth dearly loved flowers, but if you choose, in lieu of flowers, she would be grateful if donations in her name would be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the USO.
