THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE OF LULA MAYS
“IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL”
ECCLESIASTES 3;1-8
A TIME TO BE BORN: October 20, 1930 in Peach Creek, West Virginia, Ms. Lula Alexander Mays was born to the union of Harrison and Mary Alexander. She was one of seven siblings.
A TIME TO GROW: Lula graduated from Westfield High School in 1948 in Alden, Alabama. She also attended Ivy Tech College in South Bend, Indiana.
A TIME TO ACCEPT: At an early age, she attended Saint Luke Baptist Church of Alden, Alabama, where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.
A TIME TO BUILD: In Chicago, Illinois she met and married Clark L.H. Mays. Together they raised four children, Roslyn (Tyrone) Collins, Brenda Joyce (Larry) Reid, Michael Levon Sr. (Brenda) Mays, and Wanda Jean (Robert) Wyatt. In 1959, the family moved to South Bend, Indiana.
A TIME TO SERVE: She began singing at an early age in many venues and choirs. In addition to singing for WAPI Radio in Birmingham, Alabama, alongside her sister, Dorothy Mays. The group was called the Evening Jubilee Singers. While living in Chicago she joined the Union Baptist Church, where she continued to participate in musical groups and choirs. While living in Indiana, she united with New Salem Baptist Church in South Bend, where she directed and sang with the senior and gospel choir for over twenty-eight years. In November, 2001 she moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where she became a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
A TIME TO WORK: She was employed as an intake worker for the Department of Human Resources in South Bend, Indiana. After retiring from (DPW), she worked as a social service worker for “Real Services” for LaSalle Park Homes. She was also employed in other various fields.
A TIME TO LAUGH: She loves to have fun by telling jokes and spending time with her family. In addition to her other favorite hobbies such as singing, baking, fishing, bingo, and playing cards.
A TIME TO DIE: On the evening of August 28, 2021, the Lord called his servant Lula Alexander Mays. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Mary Alexander; her siblings, Margaret-Reed Alexander, Annie Mae Myles, Mildred Burt, Dorothy Mays, Gladys Burt, and Herman Alexander. In addition, one step-daughter, Arilla Hunter and a special friend, Laura Woods. God embraced her in His arms and enfolded her in His love. She departed her life surrounded by her loving children. We wish her a peaceful journey home.
THOSE SURVIVING: She leaves to cherish her memory with her four children; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchild; one sister, Earlene Borden; one step-daughter, Margaret Jett. In addition, a host of nieces, nephews, special Godchildren; Franka Ralph, Shirley Smith, Barbara Ferguson, Deirdra Baker and Mervin Jones.
A TIME TO REMEMBER: In Lula’s own words:
To my family,
The time has come for me to leave you, parting is such a sweet sorrow. We will all be together one day in the Lord, until then always stay together and love each other. Always, stay with the Lord. Remember “It is well”.
