Luana “Lu” Carolyn (Spencer) Senter, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of July 31, 2021, at Cumberland Trace Senior Living in Plainfield, Indiana. Lu was born in Indianapolis to Glynn and Lena Spencer on August 30, 1928. Growing up on the southside of Indianapolis, she graduated from Southport High School in 1946.
Lu was mostly a homemaker but did have several jobs over the years. She met the love of her life, Wayne Senter, while working as a secretary for Central Rubber and Supply. They were married on June 29, 1951, at Southport Presbyterian Church.
In 1955 they settled on the westside of Indianapolis in the Eagledale subdivision. Wayne and Lu became active at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir for many years. Lu worked for L.S. Ayres and William H. Block Department Stores as well as Winona Hospital.
Luana was an avid “fabricologist” that specialized in sewing, knitting, quilting and crocheting. In 1977 she opened the Yarn ‘n Needle Depot on W. 34th Street near Georgetown Road and operated that for about five years.
Lu was also a Girl Scout leader and loved taking her troops to Camp Gallahue on the westside of Indianapolis.
In the late 60s Lu joined the Capital City Chorus of the Sweet Adelines Inc. But when she joined something, she gave it her all and was a member for 45-years. She sang in numerous quartets over the years and loved singing at surprise events such as birthday parties and “singing Valentines.” Sweet Adelines was a big part of her life, her hobby, her esteem and she traveled nationwide to some big chorus and quartet events for many years.
Later in life Lu was a member of the choir at Speedway Christian Church and still heavily involved in quilting making several in her later years.
Luana is preceded in death by husband Wayne; her parents Glynn and Lena Spencer; brother Barton Spencer; sisters Doris Ragsdale and Arleen Kolb; son-in-law Brian Martin.
Lu is survived by daughter Carol Quillman (Terry) of Bloomington; Mark Senter (Leanne) of Plymouth and Lisa Martin (deceased Brian) of Plainfield. Also, seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
