July 13, 1940 — August 26, 2025

Loyal Roger Sabean, age 85, of Plainfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

A private family graveside service with Air Force Honors will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Loyal was born on July 13, 1940, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Sumner H. and Mildred D. (Plonsky) Sabean.

He married Carolyn Schmidt on July 31, 1993, at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Indianapolis. Loyal is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Sabean of Plainfield, IN; his children: Dawn Carlbom (Brad) of Harris, MN; Kimberly McIntosh (Jerry) of Brownsburg, IN; Kelly Harlan (Gail) of Plainfield, IN; and Tracey Sabean (Jennifer) of Indianapolis, IN. His stepchildren Sharon Peoples of Coatesville, IN; Thomas Hacker of Lumberton, NC; John Hacker (Connie) of Savannah, GA.

He was a proud grandfather to Jessica Ramirez (Ricardo) of Lincolnwood, IL, Zach Carlbom (Ashley) of Hopkins, MN, and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Loyal was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Sumner Sabean Jr.; and his sister, Doris (Sabean) Wallin; and stepson James Hacker.

Loyal grew up in St. Paul and, after graduating high school, joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as part of the dental team. Following his military service, he returned to Minnesota and worked for four different paper companies as a Transportation Manager for over 36 years. A career shift took him to Fairfield, Ohio, and eventually to Indianapolis, where he spent the remainder of his years.

Loyal never missed a good conversation and had a true talent for connecting with people. After a successful career in the paper industry, he found joy in a second career as a real estate agent.

In retirement, Loyal remained active and social. He enjoyed watching women’s sports on television, cheering for the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings, traveling in the motorhome with Carolyn, dancing, playing golf, sitting on the back porch watching birds and enjoying life.

He will be fondly remembered for his warmth, his love of a good deal especially on the clearance rack with coupons in hand, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome in a conversation.
