Loy Hawes

Loy Lorane Hawes, 95, of Zionsville, Indiana, was called to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 22, 2012. She was a beloved family member and friend. Loy was born on March 23, 1917, in Silverdale, Kansas, to Earl and Pearl Thompson. During her high school years, Loy's family moved to Neosho, Missouri. While attending a church social in Neosho, Loy would meet her future husband. Loy went on to marry the love of her life, the gentleman from the church social, Calvin Wesley Hawes. They were married for sixty-one years before Calvin's passing. In 1942, Loy and Calvin moved to Indiana with their two young daughters. Calvin had found work as a pipefitter at Rock Island Refinery in Zionsville. A member of Zionsville United Methodist Church, Loy was Superintendent of Sunday School programming for children and started the first children's vacation bible school in town. Later, Loy and Calvin became members at Abundant Life Church in Indianapolis where they worshipped for many decades. Loy was Superintendent of the Nursery, ministered to the sick, and gave praise to God through her talents as a pianist and organist at Abundant Life. Salem United Methodist Church in Zionsville was Loy's last beloved place of worship. She was employed by Pitmann-Moore in Zionsville. Loy worked on the manufacturing of the polio vaccine. She enjoyed her job because of its medical significance to humanity. Loy was an accomplished seamstress, cook, gardener, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She sewed clothes for her family and friends. She would can and preserve from the family garden. She enjoyed baking and decorating elaborate cakes, as well as making homemade candies. Most of all, Loy enjoyed cooking meals for family, friends, or those in need of comfort food during time of sickness. Recently, Loy celebrated her 95th birthday with a gathering of family and friends. She reflected on this celebration as one of the most special days of her life next to becoming a mother and grandmother. Loy will be remembered as a Christian woman that lived by example. She loved God and country. When someone was in need Loy would be there for them and do it in the name of the Lord. The door to her home was always open, no invitation was ever needed. Loy is survived by her two daughters and their husbands: Calva Jean Ham (Fred), Ila Jane Babel (Bernie); grandchildren: Lori, Stephen, Christopher Ham (Jill), Jeffrey, Kenneth (Barb), Michael Weber; great grandchildren: Calvin, Shelby, Olivia, Noah Ham, Jennifer, Kayla, Calvin, Neal, Ian, Paige, Fiona, Kendall, Mitchell Weber; one sister: Joyce Swinehart. Loy was preceded in death by her parents, husband (Calvin), brother (Floyd), and sister (Ona). Services will be Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 2p.m., with calling from 11 a.m. until time of service at Flanner and Buchanan Zionsville. Memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to Salem United Methodist Church in Zionsville, Indiana.
