Lola Mae Berry, age 94, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away Friday, July 16, 2021, at her residence.
Lola was born in Chetopa, Kansas and was the daughter of Frederick E. Sparks and Lola (Boyer) Sparks. She had two brothers, Charles Frederick Sparks and Robert Wilson Sparks, and two sisters, Dorothy Ann Sparks and Betty Jean (Sparks) Snow. Her first years were spent in the St. Louis, Missouri area and then the family moved to Medford Oklahoma where her Grandfather Boyer had homesteaded during the Oklahoma Run.
After graduating from Medford High School, she spent a short time with Boeing in Wichita Kansas as a “Rosie the Riveter” before moving to Los Angeles, California. When her big brother Fred was declared missing in action, she returned to Medford. Fred and Bob, both in the Army, returned home after the war ended.
Lola moved to Enid, Oklahoma where she met and married the love of her life, Doyce L Berry, on December 6, 1947. They had four children and a lifetime of love before Doyce passed away on July 27, 1989.
Lola was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed crocheting, bowling, and spending time in her garden. She also spent time as a real estate agent with Shilling Realtor.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, spouse, youngest daughter, and daughter-in-law. She was the last of her generation for the Sparks/Berry family, and is survived by her son, Michael Berry, Sherwood, Arkansas; daughter and son-in-law, Rosie and Terry Mizell and daughter Wynonna Berry all of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, family, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 from 4-8pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at the Marine Barracks, 550 S Audubon Rd, Indianapolis, Indiana 46219. Chaplain Rob Mifflin will officiate.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or your favorite Children’s Hospital.
