Linda Kay Hughes

Linda Kay Hughes, 74, daughter, sister, friend, dog mother, and plant lady, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at her home surrounded by family, friends, and her beloved dog Barney.

Linda was born on March 7, 1949, in Lafayette, Indiana, where she spent most of her childhood. She was the daughter of Ava Lee Wilson Hughes and Robert LeRoy Hughes. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1967. She attended DePauw University and graduated in 1971.  After teaching for four years in Rossville, Indiana, Linda continued her career as a social worker.  Linda ultimately decided to follow her passion and attend law school. Linda graduated in 1996 from Indiana University McKinney School of Law. Linda was admitted to the Indiana State Bar in 1997.  She practiced as a deputy with the Indiana State Public Defender until her retirement in 2014. As an attorney with the Public Defender, Linda zealously advocated for fairness in the justice system. In retirement, she spent her time pursuing her love of animals, horticulture, music, and the arts.

Linda is survived by her sister Barbara S. Hughes Bender and brother Robert L. Hughes, as well as two nieces, two nephews and many close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents.
