Linda Arlyn Meiss passed away on May 19, 2018. Born in Gary, Indiana in 1944, Linda grew up in northern Indiana. The only child of Arthur and Evelyn House, she attended elementary schools in the Gary area before moving to New Jersey, where she graduated from Freehold High School; from there she went on to earn degrees from the University of Delaware and the University of Illinois and also studied for many years at IUPUI. Educated as both a scientist and a teacher, for many years she taught biology, botany, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and astronomy at Franklin Community High School. In her limited leisure time she lived a quiet and diverse intellectual and creative life; her interests and hobbies included service to her church, reading, nature photography, knitting, sewing, reading, bible study, botanical illustration, and other related pursuits.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard Meiss, and her sons Alan (Carolyn) and Mark (Heather), all of whom love her deeply and will remember her fondly, as will her extended family. A long time member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Speedway, Indiana, she will be missed by her many friends and family who have offered loving support during her life and final illness.
The funeral service will be held at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 6118 Crawfordsville Road, Speedway, Indiana, on Wednesday, May 30 at 11:00 AM. It will be preceded by visitation at the church from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. Following the service there will be a brief graveside gathering at Floral Park Cemetery, 425 North Holt Road, Indianapolis. This will be followed by a light lunch at the church, to which all are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
