Lewis Carpenter, 97, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on March 16, 2023. He was born on September 20, 1925, in Jackson, Kentucky, to parents, Timothy Carpenter and Sarah (Turner) Carpenter.
Lewis worked as a job setter at the Chrysler plant on Shadeland Avenue for a dedicated 35 years. He moved from the Detroit plant to Indianapolis when the new plant was built and only retired because the plant was closing. Doug and Shirley joked he was given the keys to the plant and was told to “Turn off the lights when you leave”.
He enjoyed playing his banjo that he learned to play as a teenager. Bluegrass music and the Grand Ole Opry were his favorite past time. He loved working in his vegetable garden. When his late wife, Loretta, would be tending her flower beds, she would find peppers scattered throughout. He always denied knowing anything about it.
Lewis is survived by his children, Doug (Teresa) Carpenter and Shirley Frauli; grandchildren, Amy (James) Emerson and Stacey (Walt Caswell) Carpenter; great-grandchildren, Mason and Delaney Emerson; and brother Randy Carpenter.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Timothy and Sarah (Turner) Carpenter; loving wife, Loretta Carpenter; son, Nelson Carpenter; son-in-law, Chuck Frauli; and siblings, Marie Carpenter, Oval Trusty, Ethel Little, Arthur Carpenter and Willie Carpenter.
