Lelia S. Thompson (Sagamore of the Wabash)

Lelia S. Thompson, 96, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away November 13, 2019. She was born on June 29, 1923 to the late Trever and Marie Bernett Stiles.

She graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1941. Lelia worked for The State of Indiana’s Employment Security Division for 45 years, retiring in 1987. That same year she was honored with the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash Award by Governor Orr for her managerial work with the State of Indiana.

Lelia was married to the late William A. Thompson for 47 years. In the 70s, they owned and operated a restaurant in Martinsville, IN. After William’s death, Lelia relocated to Connersville, IN where she lived until 2014 when she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law. Lelia was preceded in death by her brother, Trever Stiles, and sisters, Phyllis Saunders and Beatrice Abdon. She is survived by her daughter Mary Beth (Richard) Carson of Indianapolis, IN, and two grandchildren, Charles Carson of Arlington, VA and Emily Carson (Gregory) Dunn, of Indianapolis, IN.

Lelia was known for her kindness, warm heart, and acts of service. She quietly found ways to show others she cared through her actions. She was the matriarch of her family and assisted many family members and friends through difficult times. Lelia’s hobbies included crocheting, baking, and collecting glassware and antiques. She was a member of Questers and Tri Kappa in Connersville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette County Humane Society.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 4 -6 p.m. with a funeral service to begin at 6 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St. Indianapolis, 46229.
