Laura Jean Hessong

Laura Jean (Holstein) Hessong passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born December 9, 1933, in Franklin, Indiana, Laura was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother (affectionately known as Nanny). She dedicated her life to caring for her family and her many dear friends.

Laura was a proud member of Franklin High School's close-knit class of 1952. She joined the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) and was a 50-year member of Chapter #300. She attended Broadway United Methodist Church, where she served as a Children's Sunday School teacher for over four decades, and as choir mother to the Children’s Choir. At Broadway she lit up the room (literally) with her festive battery-powered necklaces and holiday sweaters.

She also held the positions of Past Guardian and honorary member of Bethel 3 and Past Grand 2nd Messenger of Indiana Job's Daughters.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Edgar W Hessong; her father, Paul E Holstein; her mother, Laura Frances (Dollens) Straley; and her sister, Martha Helen (Holstein) Shank. She is survived by her son, Keith Hessong; daughter, Debbie (Hessong) Wellin; and grandsons, Ethan Wellin (Cat Higley), Bryce Wellin (Suzie).

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Westminster Village North for the wonderful care provided to Laura over the past two years.

In parting, Laura would often say, “you stay out of trouble,” but with a smile implying she herself would do no such thing. Stay out of trouble, Laura Jean! You will be dearly missed.

A visitation will be hosted Tuesday May 27th from 4PM to 8PM at Flanner Buchanan- Broad Ripple. There will be a “Celebration of Life” service Wednesday May 28th at 11AM at Broadway United Methodist Church with visitation preceding at 10 AM. Burial following the service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
