Larry Edward Satterfield, a devoted father, passionate activist, and visionary entrepreneur, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on Nov. 24, 1942 in Richmond, Indiana, Larry was a beacon of love, hope, and inspiration to all who knew him.
Larry’s life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and family. His drive to succeed against the odds began early. Raised in the church, he was taught to work hard and help anyone who needed it. He spent his whole life crusading for the disenfranchised and underserved.
Larry was tenacious in removing obstacles that stood in the way of his ever-expanding vision in sports, entrepreneurship and in life. He was the first Black quarterback in the history of Richmond High School's football team and held the record for high jump well into the 1980s. He became one of the first Black owners of a Dunkin’ Donut franchise in the United States, as well as the first Black franchise owner of a McDonald’s in Indianapolis. He went on to own two Burger King franchises in the Detroit area. He retired in Ann Arbor, Michigan where he brokered businesses across the United States and offered consulting services to entrepreneurs.
Above all, Larry was a loving father to his three beloved daughters: Larissa, Sonya, and Lori. He cherished every moment with them, imparting wisdom and confidence that they could achieve anything they put their minds to. Larry’s love for his daughters was boundless, and he took great pride in their achievements, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams and stand up for what they believe in.
Larry is survived by daughters, Larissa Satterfield, Sonya (Eddie) Mason and Lori Satterfield; grandchildren, Tyler Hubert, Sydney Mason and Elisha Mason; his former wife and his daughters’ mother, Gloria Bridgeforth; sisters, Sharlene Satterfield and Janice (Darnell) Smallwood; brother, Eugene (Marthenia) Satterfield; and lifelong partner, Jane French, and her daughter, Danielle; and numerous extended family members who will forever remember his boundless energy, infectious smile, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.
Preceding him in death are his parents Percy, Sr. and Williera, and brothers Percy, Jr., James “Jim” and William “Bill”. He will be missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Aug. 25, 2024, at the Flanner Buchanan - Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), where friends and family will gather to honor his legacy and share memories. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the MASE Faith Foundation, ensuring that his spirit of making a difference in the lives of those disenfranchised and his compassion continues to thrive.
